Automotive

After US automakers that were strapped for cash and were facing all sort of troubles, suppliers are also lining up financial, legal advice for possible bankruptcy filings in the US. They would be the next shoe to drop in the worsening auto recession. Developing world was less hit though. Late 2008 some companies such as GM seemed to be making progress in terms of new car launches, marketing campaigns. On the cost side market slowdown has resulted in reducing industry's overcapacity. New labor agreements in the US and customers buying comeback could reverse the fortunes of the auto industry.

Design and development of major components, modules and systems of an automobile is increasingly being done by suppliers. Automakers are including suppliers from Day 1 for the most of the vehicle programs promoting co-creation. Apart from automotive parts suppliers, engineering services firms have geared up to the outsourced R&D opportunity.

Also there has been a movement towards cleaner and greener alternative propulsion systems like fuel cells, hybrids, bio-fuels, etc.

Energy

While energy demand may have been affected due to slowdown in global economic growth, longer term growing energy demands and supply constraints will present daunting challenges going forward. To address supply issues especially in the developing countries lot of capacity needs to be build.

Carbon footprinting and GHG reduction strategies are becoming mainstream not only in the developed world but also the developing world.
